More people than ever seek SVP's help as the cost-of-living crisis deepens. It received 1,150 calls per week for help (30% increase on last year) already. This is expected to peak at 1,400 calls per week in December.
Significant numbers of people in Cork and Kerry reach out to SVP for help. Most seek assistance as they struggle to cope with sky-high energy costs, increased prices for fuel and dramatic rises in food prices.
The charity said it sees an increase in calls from lower-income earners who are in full-time employment.
SouthWest Regional Co-ordinator Gerry Garvey said the charity has geared up for one of the most difficult periods for the region in many years.
“We received an unprecedented number of calls for this time of year and from all walks of life. Calls are from pensioners and social welfare parents, carers and those on disability payments, and those on lower-paid employment."
